Morning quiet-time ionospheric current reversal at mid to high latitudes
نویسنده
چکیده
The records of an array of magnetometers set up across the Australian mainland are examined. In addition to a well-defined current whorl corresponding to the ionospheric Sq current system, another system of eastward flowing currents is often found in the early morning. The system is most easily identified at observatories poleward of the focus of the Sq system, where a morning reversal from eastward to westward currents can be seen. The time of the reversal is usually later, sometimes up to 12 h local noon, in June (Southern Winter) than in other seasons. There is some evidence of a similar current system at other longitudes and in the Northern Hemisphere. An important outcome of the study is that it enables identification of which features of a daily variation of the northward magnetic field 1X relate to an Sq current whorl and which must be attributed to some other current system.

Combining Neural Network with Genetic Algorithm for prediction of S4 Parameter using GPS measurement
The ionospheric plasma bubbles cause unpredictable changes in the ionospheric electron density. These variations in the ionospheric layer can cause a phenomenon known as the ionospheric scintillation. Ionospheric scintillation could affect the phase and amplitude of the radio signals traveling through this medium. This phenomenon occurs frequently around the magnetic equator and in low latitu...
متن کاملThe Southern Hemisphere and equatorial region ionization response for a 22 September 1999 severe magnetic storm
The ionospheric storm evolution process was monitored during the 22 September 1999 magnetic storm over the Australian eastern region, through measurements of the ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC) from seven Global Positioning Systems (GPS) stations. The spatial and temporal variations of the ionosphere were analysed as a time series of TEC maps. Results of our analysis show that the main...
متن کاملLHR band emissions at mid-latitude and their relationship to ionospheric ELF hiss and relativistic electrons
LHR band emissions observed at mid-latitude were investigated using data from the EXOS-C (Ohzora) satellite. A typical feature of the LHR band emissions is a continuous banded structure without burst-like and cut-off features whose center frequency decreases as the satellite moves to higher latitudes. A statistical analysis of the occurrence characteristics of the phenomena showed that midlatit...
متن کاملEISCAT verification in the development of ionospheric tomography
This paper highlights the important role played by the EISCAT radar for verification in the development of tomographic techniques to produce images of ionospheric electron density. A brief review is given of some of the stages in the application of tomographic reconstruction techniques to the ionosphere. Results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the method in imaging ionospheric ...
متن کاملSearch for magnetically quiet CHAMP polar passes and the characteristics of ionospheric currents during the dark season
The magnetic activity at auroral latitudes is strongly dependent on season. During the dark season, when the solar zenith angle in the polar region is larger than 100 at all local times, the ionospheric conductivity is much reduced, and generally low activity is encountered. These time intervals are of special interest for the main field modelling, because then the geomagnetic field readings, i...
